Jolla lotta ‘love’ expected for May 20 Sailfish OS phone event

Jolla lotta 'love' expected for May 20 Sailfish OS phone event

Most smartphone owners are looking forward to Android Key Lime Pie or Apple iOS 7, but Finnish phone developer Jolla is promising an OS love-fest on May 20.

"We are super excited to welcome you to hear about Jolla’s next steps and get a sneak preview of what is yet to come," read the invite sent to various press outlets today.

The "Love Day" invitation isn’t a belated Valentine’s Day card that’s three months old, but widely believed to be a summons to check out the company’s first smartphone 10 days from now.

Jolla, a start-up that consists ex-Nokia employees, has said that it’s preparing a phone running its newly unveiled Sailfish operating system in the month of May.

Here MeeGo!

May 20 will be an opportunity for Sailfish to prove Nokia wrong after it had abandoned the MeeGo operating system that accompanied the Nokia N9 smartphone.

Jolla picked up where Nokia left off and intends to turn the Linux-based mobile operating system into an iOS and Android competitor.

The invitation doesn’t hint at what Jolla’s first smartphone will look like, but has said that the device will have a "modern Scandinavian design," according to Jolla Chairman Antti Saarnio.

That’s a step in the right direction for Jolla’s MeeGo successor, as something radically new would help it stand out in a marketplace where Windows Phone 8 and BlackBerry 10 are fighting for third place.

If a Motorola prototype sounds like the X Phone, is it the X Phone?

If a Motorola prototype sounds like the X Phone, is it the X Phone?

The elusive Motorola X Phone, the rumored first smartphone under the Google-Motorola partnership, may have just been shown off in prototype form thanks to a four-photo leak.

The device in question has markings that back up several rumors about the hotly rumored Android phone, first and foremost being the AT&T logo in the top left corner.

Another hint is that this composite photo, posted by @evleaks, depicts the purported X Phone with a screen that isn’t too large.

That’s important because it would fit into the "sweet spot" screen category that Motorola design chief Jim Wicks said the company found to be "just about right" for consumers.

X-Fone Home

A second leaked photo of the supposed Motorola prototype gives further, albeit blurry, credence to the fact that this is the Google X Phone.

The backside photo reads "Model: XFon-ATT," which almost seems too good to be true.

Of course, this is different from the model number that was floating around the internet this week, XT1055.

A benchmarking app that caught the XT1055 claimed it to be a 1.7GHz quad-core processing smartphone running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, which sent X Phone rumors swirling.

Whether or not this AT&T-bound Motorola prototype is the X Phone remains to be seen, as the U.S. wireless carrier and Google have not yet responded to TechRadar’s inquiry. We doubt we’ll hear anything definitive on this speculative device, but we’ll keep you posted.

Confirmation what the X Phone looks like, instead, may come at the Google IO conference, which kicks off on May 15.

Motorola XT1055 leaks and world screams ‘X Phone!’

Motorola XT1055 leaks and world screams 'X Phone!'

A handset going by the model number XT1055 has popped up on a benchmarking app, leading people to believe it could relate to the new Motorola flagship smartphone.

Spotted on the Antutu Android app by Japanese site Rbmen, the XT1055 apparently runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean while packing a juicy 1.7GHz quad-core processor.

The Motorola name isn’t actually attached to the benchmark results, but the XT extension has been used by the now Google-owned manufacturer on previous handsets – the XT9825 is better known as the Razr HD, while the XT890 is the Intel-powered Razr i for example.

Born in the USA

According to the benchmark app the handset is question was tested in the States, although you should take all this with a pinch of salt as results can be faked.

There’s been a lot of talk surrounding Motorola’s next big handset, especially now it’s owned by Google and talk of a "X Phone" seems to suggest we’ll see something later in the year.

The annual Google IO conference takes place in a couple of weeks where there is a chance we’ll see a new flagship smartphone bearing the search giant’s brand there, but we’re going to have to wait and see.

Motorola X phone apparently delayed until late August

Motorola X phone apparently delayed until late August

The hotly rumoured Motorola X phone still hasn’t been made official, but its expected release date has apparently already been pushed back.

Initial reports suggested the handset, tipped to run Google’s next version of Android dubbed Key Lime Pie, would arrive in stores in around June/July after a May announcement at the search giant’s annual I/O conference.

PhoneArena is reporting that’s no longer the case, with its sources claiming the Motorola X smartphone will arrive in "August or later".

Failing to impress

The unnamed source went on to reveal the handset it due to sport a 4.7-inch, full HD display and a slender bezel – which would fall in line with the likes of the Motorola Razr i and Razr HD.

No reason was given for the supposed delay, but it’s been suggested that Google wasn’t particularly impressed with the early prototypes, resulting in Motorola having to go back to the drawing board to impress its parent firm.

It’s not clear how well connected the source is, so we’re not taking what’s been said as gospel, but it may mean we won’t see the Motorola X at Google I/O next month – we’re just going to have to wait and see.
