Nokia targets the One in second round of HTC patent pile on

Amidst rumors marketing executives are making a mass exodus from HTC, the Taiwanese company closes out the week with more legal trouble courtesy of Nokia.

AllThingsD reported Thursday that Nokia has followed up on a year-old patent infringement lawsuit filed against HTC with two new actions this week.

Between a second complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission and a new federal lawsuit in California, Nokia has added nine additional patents for a grand total of 50 infringement claims lobbed in HTC’s direction.

HTC had little to say in response beyond its intentions to "consider all legal options to protect our rights."

HTC One ban?

Nokia accuses HTC of shifting any patent infringement blame onto its suppliers – a claim that’s falling upon deaf ears in Europe.

"We began actions against HTC in 2012 to end the unauthorized use of our proprietary innovations and technologies," Nokia asserted.

"Since then, despite the German courts confirming infringements of Nokia patents in HTC products, HTC has shown no intention to end its practices. We have therefore taken these further steps to hold HTC accountable for its actions."

According to Foss Patents, Nokia’s second ITC complaint appears to be aimed at a full U.S. import ban on the HTC One, which is listed as one of the devices implicated.

Six patents singled out in the most recent ITC complaint include delivery of new features, video encoding/decoding, radio frequency components and "app-specific permissions."

Nokia EOS and Lumia 920 may have a few things in common

Nokia EOS and Lumia 920 may have a few things in common

Nokia’s next flagship Windows Phone 8 handset was widely expected for this week’s London event, but the rumored EOS instead wound up being spotted elsewhere by an eager fan.

WMPoweruser reported Friday that a reader claims to have spent some face time with a Nokia EOS prototype, and was able to provide a fairly detailed description of the device as he/she saw it.

While the EOS was expected to introduce a metallic, waterproof chassis and quad-core processor earlier this year, the latest report claims it may be much closer to the current Lumia 920.

Given a sneak peek at the device, the tipster claims EOS is made of the same polycarbonate, but is "much lighter" and "highly tapered at both ends, giving the impression of a much slimmer device."

Pro Camera app

The report adds that Nokia’s EOS also matches the current Lumia 920 screen size and resolution, with an AMOLED display and familiar speaker grills on the bottom of the handset.

The two smartphones appear to deviate when it comes to camera optics, with an "automatic cover that opens when the camera app is started" and a Xenon flash with what appears to be a focus-assist LED. Megapixel count on the prototype was marked as "XX megapixels," written on the lens housing.

According to the tipster, the EOS will also debut a "Nokia Pro Camera" app with manual focus and an all-new user interface, which will coexist with the company’s existing camera app.

A second unnamed source told the publication that Nokia will offer the EOS in only one color and without wireless charging, an option users may be able to add by purchasing an accessory cover instead, much the same as the newly-announced Lumia 925.

Of course, as the model is in prototype form, we could see different features whenever Nokia decides to put the EOS on the market, but these details give us a decent jumping off point.

Updated: Nokia Lumia 925 release date, news and rumours

The Nokia Lumia 925 is thought to be the new flagship smartphone which is currently in the works over at the firm’s Finnish HQ.

Originally dubbed the Nokia Catwalk in earlier leaks, more recently we’ve seen reports suggesting that this production name will be changed to the Lumia 925 once it’s been made official.

From what we’ve heard so far from the good old rumour mill, the Nokia Lumia 925 appears to be a slightly updated Lumia 920 rather than an entirely new handset.

  • Nokia Lumia 920 review
  • iPhone 5S release date, news and rumours

We’ve trawled the web for all the "upstream supply sources", leaks, slips-of-the-tongue and speculation to bring you the clearest possible picture on Nokia’s next big phone – and we’ll dispense this information…

…now.

Lumia 925 release date and price

While Nokia is staying schtum on any future devices – as you’d expect – it has scheduled an event in London on May 14, sending out an invite which teased "see what’s next" and "the Nokia Lumia story continues".

Although this doesn’t single out the Lumia 925 various suggestions appear to point towards this event for the launch of the new flagship device.

We’ll be in attendance at the event to bring you all the news, so keep your eyes peeled for the official low down and our hands on Nokia Lumia 925 review – assuming that’s what Nokia will be showing off.

In terms of when we may see the Lumia 925 hit shelves we’re probably looking at June or July, although there’s an outside chance we could get our hands on it sooner if Nokia manages to produce a fast turn around time a la Apple and BlackBerry (with the Z10).

We’ve not seen anything on a price yet, but considering the Lumia 925 is expected to be Nokia’s next flagship device you can probably look at the likes of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 as a benchmark.

The not-so-big screen

While many manufacturers seem to be stuffing gigantic screens into smartphones Nokia is apparently being a little more reserved with the Lumia 925.

According to reports the 925 is set to sport a 4.5-inch display, although don’t expect to see the full HD resolution we’ve been treated to on the current crop of superphones.

A leak over in China suggests the Lumia 925 will feature a 1280 x 768 resolution – which would match the offering on the 920.

Say cheese, in the dark

Round the back the Lumia 925 is said to carry a 8.7MP camera which once again puts it in line with the 920, although it could come with even better low light qualities.

Over in the States we’ve seen various leaks and adverts for the Nokia Lumia 928, which is presumed to be the US variant of the Lumia 925 – with billboards screaming "the best low-light smartphone camera".

Bold claims indeed and we’ve got to admit we were mightily impressed with the 920′s performance in near darkness, so the 925 has its work cut out – especially now we have the ultrapixel-toting HTC One is knocking about.

Some may be a little disappointed that Nokia may not plump for a snapper similar to the 13MP lens found on the Sony Xperia Z, or even take its crazy 41MP Pureview technology to stick inside the phone – but remember none of this information is confirmed so we’ll just have to wait and see.

More of the same

There’s no surprises in the operating system department with the Lumia 925 tipped to run Windows Phone 8 – which is the sole platform used by Nokia in all its smartphones now.

It doesn’t get much more exciting with a mooted dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and a 2000mAh non-removable battery, which all smacks of a phone that came out last year and one that isn’t particularly cutting edge.

Let’s hope Nokia has a trick or two up its sleeve.

Tipped to ditch

One of the big differences between the Lumia 920 and the rumoured Lumia 925 could be the chassis, with the latter tipped to ditch the polycarbonate, found on Nokia’s current crop of smartphones, for a premium aluminium finish.

This is now ‘confirmed’ by a leak of a press picture of the handset a day before the final reveal: an @evleaks…leak… has shown a phone with a metallic rim on top of a seemingly-similar screen to the Lumia 920.

Nokia Lumia 925

There’s an ongoing debate over what material our smartphones should be made from. In one corner there’s the plastic brigade headed up by the Galaxy S4 who talk up the material’s flexible and lightweight assests.

In the other is the premium glass and metal fans who want a device which feels like the price they paid for it, with the likes of the Xperia Z, iPhone 5 and HTC One flying the high-class flag.

While Nokias have always been well made its current handset crop has been described as looking a bit toyish, and a brushed aluminium finish on the Lumia 925 would see it elevated above these.

As well as sporting a new material the Lumia 925 is also said to be lighter and thinner than the 920, with Nokia shedding 50g of weight and 2.3mm round the middle – which would wedge it in between the Galaxy S4 and HTC One.

Nokia Lumia 928 gets official, heading to the US on Verizon

The Nokia Lumia 928 has made its official debut, bringing Windows Phone 8 and souped-up camera capabilities to Verizon.

It comes as literally no surprise to anyone after Nokia’s own adverts pipped the announcement to the post.

The Nokia Lumia 928 pushes Nokia’s PureView camera tech, offering image stabilisation that Nokia promises makes the handset top of the low-light shooting pops.

There’s a Carl Zeiss lens and xenon flash on board too, which Nokia thinks means "you can leave your digital SLR at home" – we’ll reserve judgement til we take a few of our own snaps on it though.

Luminescent

Other nifty features on the Lumia 928 include a 4.5-inch OLED display replete with Gorilla Glass right to the edges of the handset, built-in wireless charging (which requires a peripheral), Nokia Here for mapping and Nokia Music.

The Lumia 928 is running Windows Phone 8 and will run on Verizon’s 4G LTE network – it’s also rocking a tri-microphone set-up for high quality audio recording up to 140db.

If all that sounds good to you, you can pick the handset up direct from Verizon from May 16 – if you buy it soon as, you’ll also get a $25 credit to use in the Windows Phone Marketplace.

No word on the Lumia 928 coming to other countries as yet, nor any inkling on price.

Nokia Lumia 928 appears on a billboard, no part of cat left in bag

Nokia Lumia 928 appears on a billboard, no part of cat left in bag

Nokia, it seems, is so pleased with its new Lumia 928 handset that it doesn’t care who knows about it, even though the device is yet to be officially launched.

We’ve seen several instances of leaked photos and specs in the last few weeks, but at least those were from ‘so-called’ insiders and not exactly supposed to be in the public domain.

However, This latest appearance on a public billboard, somewhere in the United States, really takes the cake.

If the picture is real (sent to MyNokiaBlog by a reader), and there’s little reason to believe it’s the work of a photoshop trickster, then the handset will boast "the best low-light smartphone camera."

New camera tech?

What this will entail, we’re not exactly sure. Recent speculation had suggested there were not going to be too many changes from the current flagship Lumia 920 device.

With that in mind, it would be somewhat of a surprise if Nokia debuted some new camera tech with the handset, whenever it decides to officially launch the Lumia 928

The billboard also features the Verizon Wireless network logo, which ties in with speculation that it’ll be an exclusive on that network in the United States. International availability remains a mystery at this point.

It is possible, of course, that the leaks are a deliberate ploy on Nokia’s part. It’ll face some stiff competition from the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and more, so it could be a subtle way of letting fans know its answer is on the way.

Pelican’s 16-lens camera coming to Nokia Lumia phones next year?

Pelican's 16-lens camera coming to Nokia Lumia phones next year?

Pelican Imaging’s unique 16-lens camera module for smartphones could appear in Nokia Lumia handsets as soon as next year, the company has hinted.

The Finnish manufacturer beefed up its investment in Pelican this week and now the imaging start-up’s boss says it is in talks with at least one manufacturer to bring the tech to market in a 2014 handset.

Speaking to Engadget, Pelican’s CEO Chris Pickett didn’t say which manufacturers are testing the tech, but it would seem unlikely that Nokia would pump money into a company only to see others reap the benefits.

Nokia has been very always been very active in pushing mobile camera tech, most recently with its PureView 42-megapixel sensors, which are reportedly coming to Lumia phones.

Could they be combined with Pelican’s tech too?

Why all the fuss?

So what’s this Pelican camera and what makes it so great? Well, the camera unit features 16 individual lenses, all of which snap pictures when the shutter is pressed, while depth information is captured at every pixel.

This, like the innovative Lytro camera, allows the photographer to alter the focus of the image or even have multiple focus points after the shot has been captured.

Photographers can also "change backgrounds, scale any part of the picture, or combine elements from multiple photos into interesting new images," the company claims.

Photos that are shared by the photographer feature all of the information necessary to download and edit on any device.

The tech is certainly pretty neat and could be the biggest thing to happen to smartphone cameras in a long time.

Nokia Lumia 928 handset breaks cover, is it the new flagship device?

Nokia Lumia 928 handset breaks cover, is it the new flagship device?

The Nokia Lumia 928, reported to be the company’s next top shelf Windows Phone device has emerged in purported press shots leaked online.

The device, which is rumoured to be a thinner and lighter version of the Nokia Lumia 920 device, has appeared thanks to serial tech leak artist @evleaks.

The handset is branded with the Verizon Wireless US network, which suggests it’ll be a counter to the Nokia Lumia 920, which is an AT&T exclusive in the country.

Previous rumours had suggested the device will launch on Verizon in April, but what isn’t clear is whether Nokia will bestow the device upon Windows Phone fans in other territories.

Similar internals

Previous speculation had suggested that the Lumia 928 will bring a xenon flash to complement the 8-megapixel PureView camera.

Other internal features are expected to remain the same as the Lumia 920, while initial reports that the device would tout an aluminium body were soon rebuked.
