Samsung teases new Galaxy and Ativ devices for June 20 reveal

Samsung will announce a range of new devices in June, according to a poster released by the South Korean manufacturer today.

The event is called the "Samsung Premiere 2013" and will include new devices for its Galaxy and ATIV portfolio.

The event will be held at Earls Court, London, on the 20th June and it will be streamed on its YouTube channel, at 7pm GMT, for the rest of the World to watch.

The event poster includes up-close photos of what could be a new mobile and possibly a new tablet.

Old rumours, new tricks?

Samsung could have another attempt at cracking the Windows Phone market via its ATIV range, alongside releasing the much rumoured Galaxy S4 mini.

The downsized device has already had a troubled few months, with its specifications being leaked back in April and a continuously delayed release date.

Kaspersky security software hops onto Android devices

Kaspersky Labs has done a deal with Qualcomm that will see its Mobile Security and Tablet Security software pre-installed on Android devices powered by Snapdragon processors.

Kaspersky says the deal, which was agreed on ‘special terms’, will see its apps offered to a wide range of customers who are manufacturing, or have manufactured on their behalf, Snapdragon-enabled mobile devices or tablets running Android.

The company’s Mobile Security and Tablet Security apps are currently sold on Google’s Play store for $15 (£9) and $20 (£13) respectively.

Qualcomm joins a list of more than 80 existing Kaspersky Labs partners, including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Juniper Networks and Alcatel Lucent.

Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman and CEO of Kaspersky Labs, said: "In Kaspersky Lab, we have a solid number of global companies we work with, and Qualcomm Technologies will be one of the most important among them.

"We are looking forward to providing solutions to a wide range of device manufacturers, who are designing and/or building Snapdragon-enabled mobile devices or tablets running on Android."

According to a study by NQ Mobile, which tapped into the company’s database of 283 million mobile users, the number of malware attacks on Android doubled in the period from 2011 to 2012.

NQ Mobile estimated that over 32.8 million Android devices were infected last year, versus 10.8 million in 2011 – a rise of more than 200 per cent.

One AppleCare subscription may soon cover all devices in service overhaul

One AppleCare subscription may soon cover all devices in service overhaul

Apple is reportedly planning big changes in the way it handles warranties and repairs through AppleCare, according to details leaked from an employee briefing last week.

AppleInsider brings word Apple will soon be moving to a single subscription model, which would cover all of the customer’s Apple devices, replacing or sitting alongside the current one-warranty-per-device system.

Under the proposed system, Apple would offer exclusive 24/7 support for customers, while extending the option for One to One in-store training, to other devices beyond the purchase of Mac computers.

The changes, which may arrive this autumn in the US, before a worldwide roll-out, would also extend free after-purchase phone support, which currently stands at 90 days after purchase, for at least a year.

No more easy iPhone swaps?

Another intriguing item to leak from the Town Hall-style were purported plans for the company to fix more iPhones in Apple Store locations rather than replace them.

Currently iPhone users can return their busted handsets to the Apple Store and usually receive a straight swap for a device in similar condition.

Currently, technicians at Apple Stores can replace speakers, receivers, home buttons, the vibrator motor and the iPhone’s battery. From this summer cameras, sleep/wake buttons and logic boards will also be replaced in-store.

The Apple employee who leaked the info to AppleInsider said: "The biggest announcement, was the way repairs for iPhones will be handled soon.

"The way it is now, if almost anything is wrong with an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, the entire device is exchanged for a like-new re manufactured (sic) device, whether brought into an apple store or sent in for mail in repair. Now we are starting to actually repair the products and return the same device to the customer."

Samsung nabs exclusive access to new ITV Player app for Android devices

Samsung nabs exclusive access to new ITV Player app for Android devices

ITV has launched a new version of its ITV Player catch-up application for Android with one catch: It’s only available on select Samsung devices.

The brand new app, which brings a fresh interface as well as access to the last 30 days of content from ITV channels, will be an exclusive with Samsung phones until August 31.

The app is available to download for free from the Google Play store for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2 smartphones as well as a host of tablets.

Among the supported devices are the new Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, as well as the original Note and Note 2 phablets and Galaxy Note 10.1.

Fragmentation to blame?

Users are able to play unlimited content from ITV1, 2, 3, 4 and CITV over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks. However, there’s no access to live television a la the BBC iPlayer apps.

ITV has said once the exclusivity period ends, the app will be rolled out to all users on the Google Play Store, but still, it remains strange that the broadcaster has chosen a single manufacturer to push the new app.

ITV said the fragmentation of the Android OS had played a role in its decision, which also shows the extent of Samsung’s current influence in the mobile market.

Online Product Director James Micklethwait: "We are very excited to have launched the new ITV Player app on Samsung devices.

"The fragmentation of the Android ecosystem is well-known therefore, as a commercial broadcaster, it makes sense for us to partner with the leading manufacturer of Android devices to further increase our technical knowledge of the operating system."

Android 4.2.2 hits open source, en route to Jelly Bean devices

There’s a new Jelly Bean in town, and it’s on its way to an Android device near you – but first, a quick stop at the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

Android Community reported Tuesday that the latest flavor of Android Jelly Bean is now rolling out to users everywhere in the form of version 4.2.2.

As part of the rollout, the minor Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update has been pushed to AOSP as build number JDQ39, with files tagged as "android-4.2.2_r1".

Don’t be too surprised if your device isn’t seeing the update yet – history has shown that such updates often take time, but if you’re impatient, you can manually check for Android 4.2.2 via the Settings page on your device.

Update in motion

Android 4.2.2 is a modest update for improved performance and stability, but the custom ROM community appears eager to get their hands on it regardless.

Now that the update has landed on the Android Open Source Project, developers like CyanogenMod and AOKP can get to work tweaking their ROMs to support the latest and greatest version Google has to offer.

Android enthusiasts are also eagerly awaiting a post from Android’s chief release engineer, Jean-Baptiste Quéru, which is typically posted to the Android Building Google Group shortly after a release hits AOSP.

Finally, a full changelog for the Android 4.2.2 release is also expected, which could detail any small revisions that early adopters might not have noticed.

Android Jelly Bean devices double in January

Android Jelly Bean devices double in January

The Jelly Bean build of Google’s Android platform is finally making its way to devices. According to Google’s Android Developers Dashboard, versions 4.1 and 4.2 now account for 13% of Android-powered devices.

This figure is up from 6.7% in December of last year, a doubling of installs in the last 60-days. This sharp increase is attributable to several high profile devices receiving the Jelly Bean update over Christmas, including the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Jelly Bean installs up to 13%, twice as many as in December 2012.

Slowly but surely

Google first announced Jelly Build back in June of 2012, alongside the Nexus 7 tablet. The upgrade included major performance enhancements and the new Google Now predictive search tool.

The largest fragment of the Android pie still belongs to Gingerbread, with 45% of devices still running version 2.3. This number is shrinking though, down 9% since November.

Apple, Samsung throw additional devices into patent Thunderdome

Apple, Samsung throw additional devices into patent Thunderdome

Rather than spark new lawsuits down the road between Apple and Samsung, a U.S. patent judge has ruled the two companies are permitted to toss additional gadgets onto the fire burning between them in court.

SlashGear reported Thursday that U.S. District Court Judge Paul Grewal has once again allowed Apple and Samsung to introduce more devices into their ongoing patent spat.

Judge Grewal ruled that denying additional products to be included would simply lead to new lawsuits further down the line, in keeping with an earlier decision in November.

While the two companies remain publicly mum on the latest ruling, Samsung has added a single new device, while Apple is proving the more aggressive of the two by introducing five new products to the proceedings.

Five to one

Among Apple’s newly-added devices is the Android 4.1 version of the Samsung Galaxy SIII along with the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Rugby Pro and the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab 8.9.

By comparison, Samsung showed a bit of restraint by adding only the iPhone 5 – hardly surprising, given the sheer volume of devices the Korean manufacturer produces compared to Apple.

The next round of Apple v. Samsung won’t go to trial until March, 2014, which gives each company plenty of time to add even more devices to the legal mix before everything is said and done.

BlackBerry 10 devices to cover all price points, RIM exec claims

The long awaited debut of handsets running BlackBerry 10 OS is just three weeks away, and Research in Motion claims they’ll be leaving no stone unturned when it comes to pricing.

PhoneArena reported Tuesday that BlackBerry maker Research in Motion plans to cover the entire spectrum of consumers’ wallets with its latest wave of devices – including low, middle and high price tags.

RIM Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben was on hand at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week talking up the company’s new BlackBerry 10 devices, which RIM will introduce on January 30.

BlackBerry lovers may have to be patient, however: Out of the gate, RIM is expected to only debut two new models, with others to come in the months ahead.

No exclusives

The new models are rumored to be the previously leaked BlackBerry Z10, a full touchscreen handset, and BlackBerry X10, which features RIM’s popular – and more traditional – QWERTY keyboard.

"We intend over time as we transition the portfolio to have a full range of devices," the RIM CMO told PhoneArena at CES 2013.

Boulben claims RIM will introduce at least six BlackBerry 10 models in 2013 which are currently being tested around the world by 150 carriers, none of whom will have an exclusive on the handsets in any region.
