HTC ‘Proto’ pegged as Desire X

HTC 'Proto' pegged as Desire X

HTC’s kept everyone guessing as to what its codenamed "Proto" smartphone would really be, but thanks to some retail listings that jumped the gun, it looks like we can finally peg a name to the handset.

According to the listings, the Proto is the HTC Desire X, a 5-inch device TechRadar found out should have 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch WVGA SLCD screen, 4GB of internal storage and a 5MP camera.

The Desire X now appears on several online stores, namely Multitech, ClickOK, Elkjop Business and Elgiganten Business.

Desire X rolling out soon?

A photo of the phone leaked last week and with these listings popping up, signs are pointing to an X-factor release sometime in the near future.

The device is said to fall right in the middle of the One X and One V series and, as priced by Swedish site Technytt, which found the online listings, will cost 3,000 kronor. That’s $454, or £288.

With IFA 2012 kicking off this week, might HTC make a move with its in-between smartphone?

Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade dropped, HTC explains why

Desire HD Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade dropped, HTC explains why

HTC has explained its decision to drop the Desire HD handset from its Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule.

In a post on the company blog, the manufacturer acknowledges its decision to strike-out the super-sized handset, initially listed for the upgrade, has caused upset for some users.

However, HTC has revealed that upgrading the handset to Android 4.0 would mean users would lose their stored data, and considered this solution to be unacceptable.

Re-partitioning

The post reads: "We’ve heard your feedback on our decision not to update the HTC Desire HD to Android 4.0. We completely understand that this is a controversial decision.

"For more background, due to how storage on the HTC Desire HD is partitioned – and the larger size of Android 4.0 – it would require re-partitioning device storage and overwriting user data in order to install this update.

"While technically advanced users might find this solution acceptable, the majority of customers would not."

Negatively impacted phone

HTC added that, even after installing the software update on the handset, it ‘negatively impacted the user experience’ and other features and functionality on the phone.

The blog continues: "While we are very aware of the disappointment from this decision, we believe the impact to user experience was too great. We recognize this is a change from our previous statement and for that we’re truly sorry."

HTC kills Ice Cream Sandwich update for Desire HD, then changes its mind

HTC kills Ice Cream Sandwich update for Desire HD, then changes its mind

Owners of the HTC Desire HD have found themselves smack dab in the middle of a mystery as to whether or not their favorite handset will be blessed with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

As many Android users are looking ahead to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Desire HD owners are still waiting to unwrap Ice Cream Sandwich after HTC placed the handset on its upgrade roadmap.

"We remain committed to providing customers with the latest software updates when possible," the manufacturer told Android Central last week. "As such, we are pleased to confirm we are still on schedule to deliver an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade for both the HTC Desire HD and Desire S."

Still committed

That statement was soon followed by Canadian carrier TELUS releasing an upgrade roadmap of their own which appeared to pour cold water on those plans.

Citing "poor device performance," TELUS claimed that HTC had cancelled the Android 4.0 update – but the manufacturer isn’t quite confirming that yet.

"HTC is committed to providing the best customer experience on our devices and are currently determining the ability to support Ice Cream Sandwich on the HTC Desire HD," a followup statement reads. "We’ll provide more information when we’ve completed our analysis."

So there you have it, Desire HD fans: Not quite a promise etched in stone, but we wouldn’t advise ditching your desired handset quite yet, either.
