On 16 July, unsubstantiated rumours surfaced that the HTC Evo will now be called the HTC Desire HD when it finally lands in the UK.

This model has also running under the code name ‘HTC Ace’ although the likelihood is that when it’s finally announced, it could have a completely different name altogether.

But the likelihood of its appearance seems more certain than ever, with it, along with the also rumoured HTC Vision, showing up in network inventory pages in Germany.

The Desire HD specifications are rumoured to be similar to the HTC Desire, but it will record HD video through a new 8MP camera, and feature a similar aluminium unibody design to the HTC Legend.

The Desire HD will also have a 4.3-inch display with WVGA resolution, and we assume it will be running Android 2.2 out of the box.

Processor power

Of more interest is the processor. The HTC Evo is running the current industry favourite Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, which manages 1GHz speeds.

However, rumour has it that the HTC Desire HD will be one of the first mobile handsets with the next generation Snapdragon processors, coming in at 1.3GHz speeds.

This makes Android 2.2 and its power efficiency a pivotal part of the process, as the battery life on the original build of the Desire was pretty poor, and asking for more speed is going to drain more juice.

As yet, there is no announced HTC Desire HD release date, but we think it’s likely to make an appearance within the next couple of months, perhaps even as early as IFA 2010 in September.

UPDATE: HTC has sent out an invite for a mystery event on 15 September – will this be the first time we see the HTC Desire HD?

The invite hints at a name change too – so it could end up being called the HTC Smoke or the HTC Flame too.

There’s even a video purported to show the Desire HD. Check it out below.

We’ll keep you updated as and when we hear more about the phone, but it’s high time we got another release from HTC and if the Desire could be made bigger, faster and higher spec, then that would be a ‘good thing’ in our book.
