Out of the box a substantial looking and feeling product however I am not sure about the life of the paper feed trays. Installation on a wired Ethernet network was no problem although I had to do a “try again” as the first attempt showed a firewall stopping the printer being accessed (fire wall had been turned off. After a very long initial set up (12 minutes) it promised once only. A superb quality colour print was produced on the supplied sample paper (I used one of my own photos rather than the sample supplied). Normal printing an a cheap 80gm paper was again superb even when set to lower quality and the printing speed was fine. The printing to a printable CD was a useful addition. Scanning worked well with many options and the ADF and duplex was very good.

I have not tested the FAX as I do not intend to use it.I have not yet tested Bluetooth nor the card reader Also I have not loaded some of the supplied software as I have used the ISIS OCR software before and replaced it.

Now for the niggles:

The instructions could be more comprehensive, although I am using a wired network to the printer it is also wireless and both networks can not be used at the same time, I have managed to make the laptop work into the wireless network but I need to somehow get the right driver installed to enable one of the very good features to work namely that you can print what is displayed on screen, very useful for parts of internet sites where you only want to print a bit.

I would have liked the scanner lid to have a rising hinge so that books etc could be easily scanned.

I was disappointed over the lack of manual feed, although it took everything I threw at it envelopes, labels etc it would be better to have a manual feed when you want to print an odd envelope without having to load it into the main tray and remove other size paper.

Overall a very good multifunction device, long term who knows, I am particularly interested in how reliable the paper feed is and will provide an update in the future once it has had time to bed in.

UPDATE AUG 18th 2009

I am still impressed and although I would still like a manual feed everything is still working fine. Ink consumption seems better than stated but the software measuring ink consumption is very pessimistic, don’t replace ink cartridges until you notice a deterioration in quality. The only downside of this is that you may have to override if it states that you have run out of ink. no problem one button press unless like me you have a network and the printer is not near the main PC.

UPDATE SEPT 11th 2009.

I now need a FAX and connecting was very easy excellent quality FAX. The only problem I experienced is that I am using VoiP and the FAX speed needs to be changed from the default of High to Low.This has to be done via advanced settings from the control panel rather than the set up wizard in the supplied software. This would not normally be a problem using a normal line. All of the default options are suitable and if using the wizard it takes you through all of the other settings.

I bought this to replace my HP Officejet 6200 as I needed a wireless printer for the growing number of laptops in the household.

Its not much bigger than the 6200 but has a host of additional functionality. The key feature is that I now have my main PC connected via cable and x3 laptops connected wirelessly, so no more fumbling behind the desk to change cables over or emailing stuff backwards and forwards to print out!

Unlike a previous review, you CAN link both wirelessly and via cable if you wish at the same time. Its easy to set up, just like any other HP, the print quality is very good, although the black cartridge does run out much more quickly than the others, so best have a spare always on standby.

I chose this over and above the Canon Pixma MX850, because the HP is smaller and more compact to fit on a home office desk. The new software interface is better than the previous one and is intuitive.

I use the duplex (double siding) facility all the time now to reduce on waste, its an excellent facility. The only drawback is that the page waits for about 20 seconds for the ink to dry (but it informs you of that) so if you have to print a very long document double sided, don’t sit and wait for it! but mostly I’ve used it for short documents.

There are lots of Photo features that I havn’t and probably never will use, the key is that the prints are very good quality on the supplied HP photo paper samples. To summarise, you will not be disapointed by the this All in One printer, well worth the money and cheaper/lighter/more compact than the Canon.

All in all this is a great product and “it does what it says on the tin.” Fast accurate copying in colour and b/w two sided to two sided works well, photocopying and printing. It gobbles ink but if you set print quality to fast draft then use the paper type / quality setting you will discover a tab called ink – that allows you to adjust the density of ink used – I have set it to lowest and find that with this and fast draft I still great copies and fast too. A WARNING – I replaced one of the cartridges when empty and had a problem so removed the cartridge to try a re set – this is an absolute no no as I then got lots of problems and had to phone the help line in South Africa (I like in the UK) – I got mixed information but I discovered that if you put in a new cartridge and then remove it for whatever reason you will get problems and need to to a full machine reset which they talk you through and provide you with reset codes – but all is ok now. Overall I’m happy with my product 9 out of 10

Bought one of these to replace an elderly but good hp 1200 laserjet. As I don’t do a lot of printing for my small business I reckoned I could live with a modern inkjet’s cartridge prices as a trade off for the better image quality.I do a lot of scanning to pdf so getting rid of the bulky scanner off my desk makes a lot of room.Initial impressions of the scanner are good compared to the canon 8800 it will be replacing though we’ll have to see how the autofeeder sticks up to 600 page documents.I view this as a stopgap machine to whatever else is available in a couple of years time.Looks a very tidy bit of kit in the home office.I like the way you can turn it off/on on the front panel as I dread to think how many tons of co2 were created by the old 1200 always on standby, pity it takes a long time for the new machine to sort itself out after a power on.It emits a lot of creaks, grinds and whirrs making me wonder would it really stand up to office use long term? The supplied software is poor especially the cd/dvd printing utility which is laughable, there are only a few twee templates with no option to change text colours etc.I have had to buy a copy of acoustica cd labeler as the hp version is downright useless_you have been warned. That’s a real shame as I bought the device on the strength of the previous hp product, now I’m wondering what the canon I narrowly rejected would have been like.Only 2 stars because of the woeful software.

Thought I’d write an update at the end of 2009,so here goes,no real problems to report it’s still working. The supplied cartridges ran out long ago and were replaced with the XL versions which last way longer though one or two of them are now low.As soon as there was a CISS available I ordered one up and it’s ready to rock and roll as and when I need it.It cost half the price of the set of XL cartridges which says it all about the price of the XL originals. If printer makers would charge a sensible price of the consumables people would give them the business. They all need to wise up as there aren’t enough naive people around these days.I deliberately left a photo lying on a windowsill for 9 months and it hasn’t faded at all that I can see so the chromolife claims may have something to them after all.Still very noisy.Best feature for me is the Quality of CD print I can get with the Acoustica CD labeller software but HP can’t take credit for that!

The product is good, and easy to install, but the software is basic and lets the printer down, finding you photos on your computor is hard, and I could not get the software to find some, eventhough I knew were they were it would not see them,
