Sony 'actively investigating' Jelly Bean upgrades for 2011 Xperias

Sony has retracted a Facebook message saying that 2011 Xperia smartphones would not get an upgrade to Android Jelly Bean.

Last week the official Sony Mobile’s UK product manager John Cooper wrote on the Sony Xperia Facebook page that neither the Xperia Arc S or Xperia Mini Pro will be getting Android 4.1, but apparently that’s not yet officially the case.

Writing on the Sony Mobile Blog, Sony rep Anthony said, "During a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones."

Active investigation

"We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned," he continued.

"We’ll be bringing you more on our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia P and other 2012 Xperia smartphones over the next couple of weeks."

So all is not lost, 2011 Xperia smartphone owners! You may yet get a taste of sweet, sweet Jelly Bean before you upgrade to new hardware.

Android shares slipping as Apple iOS surges

Android shares slipping as Apple iOS surges

Watch out, Android. Apple is nipping at your heals.

New research shows Google Android’s mobile operating system, though still immensely popular in the United States, is losing market shares to Apple’s iOS.

iPhone’s piece of the American market pie grew from 23 percent one year ago to 33 percent while Android’s slumped from 61 percent to 56 percent during the same time period.

This is the second consecutive quarter Android’s market shares fell.

Android’s handset shipments also lagged, down to 13.4 million from 15.3 million during this time last year.

American iPhone shipments rose by 2 million devices during the same period, burgeoning from 5.9 million to 7.9 million.

Still the big kid on the block

Despite its loses, Android maintains a stronghold on more than half the U.S. smartphone market.

The company’s market share drop comes at a time when overall smartphone shipments have fallen by 5 percent in the U.S.

While Android’s losses may be a reflection of a general trend of decline, iOS shares soared by 10 percent this quarter.

In other smartphone news, more dismal numbers keep popping up for Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS.

The company shows significant market lose for the smartphone as its U.S. shares fell to 6.5 percent from 10.5 percent during that same period one year ago.

After 17 long months, Apple v. Samsung patent trial finally begins

After 17 long months, Apple v. Samsung patent trial finally begins

After failing to resolve their differences before a judge and court-ordered mediation ended without a resolution in sight, a jury will now hear the patent disputes between Apple and Samsung.

The trial, which kicks off Monday, is expected to last upwards of a month and will hopefully determine once and for all if Apple can successfully convince the jury that its rival Samsung has copied its popular iOS products.

Likewise, Samsung will have to make a case that Apple could never have created its iconic iPhone, iPod touch or iPad without patents owned by the Korean consumer electronics company.

Frenemies

The courtroom saga has unearthed a plethora of treats from the usually secretive Apple, including abandoned prototypes of the iPhone and iPod as well as email exchanges between the two companies.

Samsung claims that an Apple victory could "stifle legitimate competition," and Cupertino has already had some modest success in blocking sales of the company’s Android-based smartphones and tablets worldwide.

Each company is allowed 20 witnesses, and Apple’s lineup includes executives Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall, two of the iPhone maker’s most recognizable faces at new product introductions.

Ironically, while Apple and Samsung may be enemies in the courtroom, the two firms continue to do business together – Apple is Samsung’s largest customer for LCD panels, flash memory and the chips used to power iOS devices.

HTC One X getting a hefty price drop with AT&T

HTC One X getting a hefty price drop with AT&T

Smartphone buyers looking to snag HTC’s One X may want to wait a few more days, with reports of an imminent price drop with AT&T.

The quad-core Android smartphone will see its price cut in half, from $199.99 down to $99.99 with a two-year contract through the carrier.

The deal first surfaced online from a user on the XDA Developer forums claiming to work as an AT&T sales representative.

TechRadar contacted AT&T and confirmed that handsets will receive a price reduction starting July 29 as part of the carrier’s back to school sales.

Saved by the bell

The new price should help secure the HTC One X against the rival Samsung Galaxy S3. And while a similar discount hasn’t been announced for the Galaxy S3, the original XDA Developer forum post also mentioned a red version that will be available for special order on the same date.

We were quite pleased with the One X in our review, rating it 4.5 stars.

Even if the One X isn’t your goal, with back to school sales looming it may be wise to wait and see what other handsets get deep discounts as the month draws to a close.

New iPad and iPhone prototype photos revealed

New iPad and iPhone prototype photos revealed

It seems that the previous iPad prototype photos will not be the last of the early Apple designs leaked by the firm’s ongoing case with Samsung.

Newly released court documents reveal a variety of scrapped concepts for both the iPad and iPhone.

Of particular note are iPad designs showing a 16:9 screen format and several design iterations featuring a kickstand in the back.

Some kickstands protruded from the back on a swivel joint while others could fold flush with the casing.

One of the iPad prototypes was also labeled as iPod on the back, which may be an indication of how Apple planned to brand the tablet before settling on the final name.

The iDevices you never saw

The iPhone also had some interesting deviations, including an elongated device where the screen is only on the phone’s top half and the bottom appears to be a blank panel.

Even the more familiar designs can differ greatly from the iPhone we are familiar with, such as an angular eight-sided design that would fit in on the set of "Battlestar Galactica."

While some of the prototype models are labeled with identification numbers, there sadly are no dates provided to offer a timeline of design iterations.

Even without the chronological context, the prototypes give a fascinating and seldom-seen glimpse into Apple’s creation process.
